Compared to combustion engines, electric motors function quite differently. Electric motors operate by turning electrical energy into mechanical energy. This process requires the electric motors’ important parts to be operating efficiently. If you notice any signs of electric motor failure, you’ll want to get to the shop to have the issue inspected. By being proactive, you can potentially address the problem before it worsens and requires more costly repairs, or perhaps even motor replacement. At Industrial Motors & Machining, our local machine shop specializes in electric motor repair and maintenance in the greater Denver area. Here’s a look at an electric motor’s main components.
The electric motor’s main moving part is the rotor. It turns a shaft that then directs power to other components of the motor. By way of conductors, the rotor and stator carry currents that create the necessary force to turn the shaft.
The stator helps to generate the magnetic field that is necessary to propel the rotating armature. To prevent energy loss, stators are generally manufactured with metal linings rather than metal cores.
The air gap is located between the stator and rotor. It helps to ensure that the magnetic fields interact efficiently as they generate power. A problem with the air gap can prevent power from being created.
There are some electric motor models that have commutators that are able to reverse the current’s direction between the rotor and external circuit.
Windings are connected to commutator segments. They’re required so that the magnetic fields can create the necessary conditions for electromagnetic induction.
