Since modern welding was first developed in 1881, it has played an absolutely critical role in the evolution of modern civilization. At Industrial Motors & Machining, we employ expert welders in Denver who are truly passionate about their craft. We love learning about our industry and sharing our knowledge with other interested folks. Here are six interesting facts about welding.
The deepest underwater weld on record occurred at 2,000 feet below the surface. This was done in 2005 by the U.S. Navy.
In 1961, General Motors started using the first modern industrial robot. The robot, named Unimate, had a single arm that was used for spot welds on a Ewing, NJ assembly line. In 2003, Unimate was inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame.
Through a method called “cold welding,” astronauts are able to instantly weld two pieces of metal together. This is because in space there is no oxidation impeding the metal’s molecules.
Of all constructed products that go to market, more than half have been welded in some form or another. From home appliances to car parts, our daily routines revolve around products that have been welded.
To fuse non-compatible metals, as well as metals to non-metals, there’s a process that can be used called “explosion welding.” Through this process, controlled explosions are used to fuse metals without compromising their inherent properties.
During WWII, the U.S military needed warships to be built at a faster rate. By investing heavily in modern welding techniques, the SS Robert E. Peary was constructed in a mere four and a half days, and was later present on D-Day.
